The name Meline Waithera featured prominently in the aftermath of the devastating fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil that claimed the lives of 16 students and left dozens injured. But beyond the signpost mounted on a dormitory wall and the headlines that followed the tragedy, many Kenyans have been asking a simple question: who was Meline Waithera?

As investigators continue probing the cause of the May 28 inferno that ravaged the Meline Waithera dormitory block, the story behind the name has emerged as one of personal loss, family legacy and remembrance.

Meline Waithera Njoroge was the daughter of former Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Mbugua, who served in the National Police Service leadership between 2018 and 2023. Her father is widely credited with championing the establishment and growth of Utumishi Girls Academy, a national boarding school associated with the National Police Service and created primarily to serve children of police officers. The school was officially opened on July 15, 2021.

Those close to the institution say one of the school’s dormitory blocks was named in her honour following her untimely death, turning a family tragedy into a lasting memorial within a school her father helped build.

Reports at the time indicated that she was fatally injured after becoming trapped between two public service vehicles in the city centre. The loss deeply affected her family and colleagues of her father within the police service.

To preserve her memory, a memorial garden was later established near the school compound, while the dormitory bearing her name became a permanent reminder of a young life lost too soon.

That memorial has now become part of a new national tragedy.

Authorities say the blaze killed 16 students and injured scores of others, making it one of the country’s deadliest school fires in recent years. Investigators have since launched extensive forensic examinations, reviewed CCTV footage and interviewed students and staff as they seek to establish exactly what happened.

The tragedy has reignited debate over safety standards in boarding schools and reopened painful memories of previous school fires that have claimed young lives across the country.

The name “Meline Waithera” is no longer just the label of a dormitory block. It is the story of a daughter whose life ended in tragedy, a father’s effort to honour her memory, and now a school building forever linked to one of the darkest moments in the history of Utumishi Girls Academy.
