Kenya Dominates ADC Africa Qualifiers Semi-finals After Quarter-Final Wins

‎Kenya’s Vincent Kimutai reached the semi-finals of the ADC Africa Qualifier after defeating Uganda’s Cleeg Okalany Robert 6-5 in a deciding leg at the Jacaranda Show Ground in Nakuru.

The quarter-final victory set up an all-Kenyan semi-final against Peter Wachiuri, the most internationally experienced player remaining in the competition. Uganda’s Patrick Ocheng will face Kenya’s Benson Ngari in the other semi-final.

Kimutai averaged 63.03 in his quarter-final, below Okalany’s 68.78, but won six of the 11 legs to remain in contention for the African qualifying place at the ADC Global Championship.

The Kenyan had already survived another deciding-leg match in the round of 16, beating Nephat Muhinja Ndungu 6-5. Muhinja recorded the higher average of 74.44 compared with Kimutai’s 71.88, but Kimutai again prevailed in the decisive moments.

He began the knockout phase with a 6-1 victory over Augustus Ndigendawa in the last 32. The three results gave Kimutai a tournament knockout average of 67.35 and secured his place among the final four.

Kimutai has previously enjoyed success in Nakuru. Representing Kirima Club, he won the under-25 competition at the 2024 Nakuru Darts Open, beating Elijah Kariuki and Antony Njuguna.

Wachiuri advanced to the semi-finals with a commanding 6-1 victory over Wycliffe Omariba. He averaged 77.40, while Omariba registered 70.46.

The Kenyan had opened his knockout campaign with a 6-0 victory over Bonface Mbaabu, recording an 89.29 average. He then defeated Samuel Riunge 6-3 in the last 16 with a 79.36 average.

Wachiuri’s overall knockout average stood at 78.16 after four matches, the highest among the finalists and semi-finalists listed in the official results.

The semi-final will bring together players at different stages of their careers. Kimutai is seeking a breakthrough at continental level, while Wachiuri has already competed on the international stage.

In 2025, Wachiuri became the first African player to reach a weekly final at the MODUS Super Series in Portsmouth, England. He recorded 13 victories during the week before losing the final to Scott Campbell.

The MODUS Super Series is a weekly competition for players who do not hold Professional Darts Corporation tour cards. Twelve players compete in three groups, with six advancing to finals night. The weekly winner qualifies for Champions Week.

Ocheng became the only Ugandan to reach the semi-finals after edging Kenya’s Charles Njuguna 6-5 in another closely fought quarter-final. Ocheng averaged 72.75, while Njuguna posted 69.72.

The Ugandan started the knockout rounds with a 6-2 victory over Samuel Gathura before beating Sam Thuita 6-1 in the last 16.

He will meet Ngari, who eliminated Pascal Wanjala 6-4 in an all-Kenyan quarter-final. Ngari averaged 69.49 against Wanjala’s 67.38.

Ngari’s route to the semi-finals included a 6-2 victory over Felix Kirwa in the last 32 and a 6-5 win over David Munyua in the round of 16.

The results mean Kenya holds three of the four semi-final places through Kimutai, Wachiuri and Ngari, with Ocheng carrying Uganda’s remaining challenge.

The African Darts Group qualifier was scheduled from July 24 to 26, 2026. The field included players from several African countries, among them Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

The eventual winner will secure the African berth at the ADC Global Championship. The championship’s qualification structure allocates one place to the winner of the African qualifier, alongside places awarded through regional competitions and ranking systems in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

The ADC Global Championship is held at the MODUS Live Lounge in Portsmouth. It is distinct from the weekly MODUS Super Series, although both competitions use the same venue and broadcast platform.

Kimutai was two victories away from claiming the continental qualifying place after a knockout campaign in which he repeatedly prevailed despite opponents recording higher match averages. His next test against Wachiuri offers a place in the final and an opportunity to move within one victory of the international stage.
