Two police officers captured on camera assaulting and shooting an unarmed civilian in Nairobi yesterday have been interdicted and are facing disciplinary action.

The National Police Service (NPS) identified the officers as Police Constables Klnzy Barasa Masinde – 119413 and Duncan Kiprono – 117193 in a statement released this afternoon.

Both officers have been handed over to the Homicide Team at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters for further processing, pending further action.

The victim, Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, is in stable condition at Kenyatta National Hospital following successful surgery.

In its statement, the NPS expressed regret over the incident, calling it “unjustified” and extending sympathies to the victim and his family.

“We reaffirm our full commitment to ensuring justice is served,” the statement read.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK), led by President Faith Odhiambo, condemned the incident as “shocking” and a glaring example of impunity within the police service.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International Kenya, have joined calls for a transparent investigation and accountability.
