Ten suspected members of a criminal gang known as the “Tokyo Mafias” were arrested Friday in Makadara sub-county after officers from South B Police Station conducted a targeted crackdown on hideouts in the Fuata Nyayo and Shimo La Tewa residential areas of Nairobi.

The operation, carried out on Saturday, was informed by prior intelligence and direct tip-offs from members of the public. Officers raided multiple locations within the two estates and apprehended all ten suspects without incident, according to police.

Among the items recovered at the scene were an imitation firearm, pangas, swords, two television sets believed to be stolen property, and a collection of house-breaking implements commonly associated with residential burglaries.

“The National Police Service thanks the public for their support and urges them to remain vigilant and continue collaborating with law enforcement to ensure the safety of our neighbourhoods,” police said in a statement to newsrooms.

The recovery of house-breaking tools points to the gang’s suspected role in a series of burglaries that have troubled Makadara residents in recent months. Police have not yet confirmed the exact provenance of the television sets, but the items are being treated as stolen property pending further investigation

All ten suspects are currently held at South B Police Station, where they are being processed ahead of arraignment in court. Charges have not yet been formally announced.

The operation underscores a growing reliance by law enforcement on community intelligence to identify and neutralise organised criminal networks operating within Nairobi’s densely populated residential estates. Police have not disclosed how long the Tokyo Mafias gang had been active in the sub-region or how many members may remain at large.

The National Police Service has called on residents across Nairobi to sustain their cooperation with officers, describing community vigilance as central to maintaining neighbourhood security
