Former Prime Minister the late Raila Odinga’s long-serving and trusted bodyguard, Maurice Ogeta, has landed a senior government appointment nearly three months after Odinga’s death.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has appointed Ogeta as Adviser, Security Affairs in the County Government of Mombasa, citing his decades of experience and deep institutional knowledge gained at local, regional and international levels.

Announcing the changes, Nassir said the appointments followed the establishment of new positions by the Mombasa County Public Service Board, in line with the law.

“This appointment is informed by his many years of experience and deep institutional knowledge built at local, regional and global levels, including his service to our late Founding Party Leader, H. E. Raila Odinga, C.G.H,” Nassir said in a statement.

Ogeta worked closely with Raila for nearly two decades, spending 18 years as his personal bodyguard. A man known for his quiet discipline and composure, he stood guard through high-stakes political rallies, tense anti-government protests and moments that shaped a generation of Kenyan politics.

Even in death, Ogeta remained close to his principal, walking alongside Odinga’s cortege to his final resting place at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County.

Born and raised in Kondele, Kisumu County, Ogeta largely kept his personal life out of the public eye. Within security circles, he earned respect for his professionalism, particularly during periods of political unrest.

In July 2023, at the height of nationwide protests, he was abducted by men believed to be plainclothes police officers and held for more than 72 hours before being released. He quietly resumed duty soon after.

In a tribute following Odinga’s death, Ogeta described their relationship as one built on trust and mentorship, likening it to that of a father and son.

Ogeta’s appointment comes weeks after former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria announced plans to support him in setting up a VIP protection and training company, arguing that his experience should be shared more broadly through structured security services rather than individual bodyguard roles.

The new role marks a public transition for a man who spent most of his career in the background, protecting one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.

The governor also appointed Ken Ambani as Adviser on Creative Arts, saying his experience would help revive Mombasa’s creative sector and support young artists.
