Learners dissatisfied with their initial Grade 10 placement will have another chance to review their choices when a further application window opens from January 6 to January 9, 2026, the Ministry of Education has said.

The review opportunity comes as the government reports strong alignment between learner preferences and final placements following the first round of Senior School placement under the Competency-Based Curriculum.

Placement to Grade 10 ran from December 14 to December 19, 2025, with results released at the close of the exercise. Learners who were unhappy with their placement were allowed to apply for a review between December 23 and December 29, with outcomes now available on the placement portal.

According Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos, a total of 355,457 applications for review were received, with each learner allowed to lodge up to four requests. Of these, 211,636 applications were approved.

The remaining requests were declined mainly due to limited school capacity or the unavailability of preferred subject combinations. National schools were the most oversubscribed, with some attracting as many as 20,000 applications against an average intake capacity of about 500 learners. These included Alliance High School, Kenya High School and Mang’u High School.

CS Migos said the placement outcomes reflect a careful balancing of learner choice, school capacity and pathway requirements.

“We have placed 88 per cent of learners in line with their original or revised choices, and those still seeking reconsideration will have a further opportunity in January,” he said.

The ministry also released a breakdown of placements by pathway, showing that 51 per cent of learners were placed in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) pathway, 38 per cent in Social Sciences, and 11 per cent in Arts and Sports Science.

The ministry said joining instructions for successfully placed learners are now available for download on the placement portal, effective December 30, 2025.
