Leaders of the Democracy for Citizens Party have accused President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen of failing to stop attacks on the party’s rallies after its convoy was targeted twice during a tour of Nakuru County.

Speaking at a hotel in Nakuru, DCP secretary-general-designate and Nyandarua Senator John Methu said government warnings against political violence had not been followed by action against those responsible.

Methu alleged that an attack on the party’s convoy at Soko Mjinga in Kaptembwa a day earlier had been organised by local leaders seeking to intimidate DCP members and prevent them from engaging residents about their concerns with the government.

“When we saw President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen say the culture of goons would end, we knew it would only be a short while before things got out of control. Goons have become part of national security managing the politics of the country. It is very sad,” Methu said.

He also accused Nakuru County Police Commander Samwel Boit of failing to protect the party’s campaign team. Methu claimed Boit had been complicit through inaction, despite being responsible for police operations in the county.

Methu said the attacks would not deter DCP leaders from travelling across the country to promote the party’s policies and mobilise supporters.

The party held rallies in Njoro, Elburgon and Molo during the second leg of its Nakuru County tour. Its motorcade was later pelted with stones at Salgaa in Rongai Constituency, according to party officials.
