Kenya is looking to leverage Gor Mahia’s latest league triumph to strengthen football development, inspire emerging talent and improve the country’s competitiveness on the continental stage after the club secured a record-extending 22nd national title.
President William Ruto today congratulated the club for reclaiming the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League crown and reinforcing its position as the country’s most successful football club.
Gor Mahia returned to the summit after surrendering the title last season, completing a campaign that saw the club finish ahead of its rivals in the race for the league crown.
“Today, we celebrate more than a football trophy. We celebrate excellence, resilience, consistency, and the power of teamwork.” the President said while presenting the trophy to players, officials and supporters gathered at State House.
Government officials said the achievement demonstrates the importance of investment in coaching, player development and club management as Kenya seeks stronger performances in regional and continental competitions.
The title-winning season also brought individual recognition for Gor Mahia, with coach Charles Akunnor and midfielder Enock Morrison earning top honours at the SportPesa end-of-season awards.
Football analysts say Gor Mahia remains one of East Africa’s most successful clubs, with its performances continuing to influence discussions on talent development and the growth of professional football in Kenya.
The club also supplied the largest number of players to Kenya’s Harambee Stars squad for the African Nations Championship, highlighting its contribution to the national team setup.
“Your success is therefore not only a victory for your club, but also a victory for Kenya,” President Ruto said, linking the team’s achievements to broader national objectives in sport and youth development.
Gor Mahia will now shift focus to the CAF Champions League, where the club will seek to improve Kenya’s profile in continental football.
According to the Confederation of African Football, the Champions League is the continent’s premier club competition and offers participating teams greater exposure and commercial opportunities.
The government says ongoing investments in sports infrastructure, governance reforms and grassroots programmes are aimed at helping clubs and athletes compete more effectively at higher levels.
For many young footballers, Gor Mahia’s latest title provides an example of the rewards of sustained development and competitive performance within the domestic game.
“As champions, you now carry the hopes of our nation into the CAF Champions League. We are confident that you will represent Kenya with pride, courage, and distinction,” the President told the team.
