Sarolyne Mwendia has vowed not to be distracted or intimidated by critics following her defection from Jubilee to the ruling United Democratic Alliance.
She said the move followed months of reflection on development priorities and political direction, arguing the shift positions Laikipia closer to national decision-making.
Sarolyne dismissed criticism from political opponents, saying only voters who supported her have the moral authority to question her decision to change political allegiance.
“Let those who were meant to vote for me criticise me. Wengine ni keherehere tu na kelele za chura,” she said.
She accused Jubilee of abandoning the people, arguing the party no longer reflects the aspirations and expectations of residents in Laikipia West.
Sarolyne said her support in the 2022 Laikipia West parliamentary race was driven largely by her development agenda rather than party loyalty.
UDA candidate Wachira Karani won the seat with 42,172 votes, while Sarolyne finished a distant second after garnering 12,875 votes.
“They did not vote for a logo; they voted for a vision. Today we move that vision closer to the centre of power,” she said while announcing her Senate candidature.
She said joining UDA was part of a wider political calculation aimed at positioning Laikipia to access development opportunities through closer engagement with the national government.
While thanking residents for their support during the transition, Ms Mwendia said their trust would guide her next political steps as she prepares for the Senate race.
“My mission for the Senate is simple: bring back our fair share of the national cake and protect every cent meant for our county,” she said.
