The woman, identified as Marion Napei Sinkeet, said she was intoxicated and taken advantage of, distancing herself from claims that the situation was deliberate.

Her statement comes days after a video circulated online showing her dancing unsteadily as a man filmed her in what many viewers described as a degrading and exploitative moment. The clip triggered public anger and renewed debate over consent and the misuse of social media.

Napei narrated her experience while speaking to Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service Geoffrey Mosiria.

She said the incident stemmed from a planned meeting with a man she had been in contact with for about a year. According to her, the man had been living abroad and had made repeated promises during their conversations.

The two agreed to meet on January 5 after the man contacted her through a text message. She said he offered to pay for her transport and sent money for a cab.

After arriving at a club, Napei said she found several people already there, including the man’s friends. Alcohol was ordered and the group continued drinking.

As the night went on, she asked the man to settle the bill. She said he initially asked her to continue drinking before eventually paying and buying food.

They later moved to a different venue. It was there, she said, that matters escalated and she lost control due to intoxication.

“I was very drunk, and that man took advantage of the situation,” she said, adding that the recording was done without regard for her dignity.

Napei described the incident as humiliating and said she has been left traumatized by the public reaction.

“He embarrassed me and body-shamed me. I feel deeply affected by what happened,” she said.

She apologised to her family and to the public, acknowledging that she made a mistake.

“I am sorry to my family, and I am sorry to myself. I need to find a way to forgive myself,” she said.

Her account has shifted attention from the viral clip to questions around consent, responsibility and the ethics of recording and sharing vulnerable moments online.
