Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has nominated Roads and Public Works executive Danish Onyango as Deputy Governor, a move expected to reshape political dynamics in the county.
The appointment follows the resignation of former Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga in February, citing persistent frustrations and irreconcilable differences with Governor Wanga.
“I have nominated Mr Danish Otieno Onyango to serve as Deputy Governor subject to approval by the County Assembly,” Wanga said in the order.
Onyango joined public service in 2003 and has risen through the ranks, serving in senior national government roles including as an undersecretary in the State Department of Infrastructure.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Political Science and Public Administration from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Arts in Development Studies.
Wanga said Onyango will continue serving as County Executive Committee Member for Roads and Public Works, citing his results-driven leadership and infrastructure development track record.
Through his leadership, the county expanded road connectivity across all 40 wards, opening previously inaccessible areas and improving transport links for communities.
“We have opened groundbreaking roads where none existed, significantly enhancing connectivity across Homa Bay County,” Wanga said, highlighting his performance record.
In the 2024/25 financial year, the county opened 736 kilometres of new roads, while 538 kilometres of existing roads underwent routine maintenance.
Additionally, 116 kilometres of targeted access roads were rehabilitated to improve access to schools, health facilities, markets and beaches across the county.
Onyango has also led key flagship projects, including KSh1.4 billion KISIP II initiatives in informal settlements and road upgrades in partnership with the national government.
He played a central role in the upgrading of roads in Homa Bay Town and the expansion of Kabunde Airstrip, boosting transport and economic activity.
Wanga said Onyango also chaired technical and steering committees for major events, including the 2024 Homa Bay International Investment Conference and Madaraka Day celebrations.
If approved, Onyango will deputise Wanga, who has led Homa Bay County since 2022 after succeeding former governor Cyprian Awiti.
