Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in Lagos, Nigeria ahead of the Future Africa Leaders Awards, a continental initiative that recognizes young Africans driving social change through leadership, education and mentorship.

Uhuru is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the awards ceremony and announce the winner of the Star Prize, the event’s highest honour, which is awarded to an individual whose work has demonstrated measurable impact on communities and inspired youth leadership across Africa.

He was accompanied by former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, reflecting Kenya’s continued engagement in regional and continental leadership platforms beyond formal state office.

The Future Africa Leaders Awards bring together policymakers, civil society actors, private sector leaders and young innovators from across the continent. The programme aims not only to celebrate excellence but also to provide mentorship, visibility and networks to emerging leaders tackling challenges in education access, youth empowerment, governance and social inclusion.

Since leaving office in 2022, Kenyatta has remained active on the African stage, taking on mediation roles under the African Union and participating in forums focused on peace, leadership transition and youth development.

His participation in the Lagos event underscores a growing emphasis by former African leaders on nurturing the next generation as a pathway to long-term stability and development.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy and most populous country, has increasingly positioned Lagos as a hub for continental conversations on innovation, leadership and entrepreneurship, with events such as the Future Africa Leaders Awards drawing participants from across the region.
