Six people, among them politicians, were killed after a helicopter crashed and burst into flames in Chepkiep, Mosop Sub-county, Nandi County.
Nandi County Police Commander Samuel Mukuusi confirmed the 4.45pm accident, saying all six occupants died at the scene.
The aircraft, a Eurocopter AS350B3 Ecureuil, went down during ongoing heavy rains pounding the area.
Preliminary reports indicate bad weather may have contributed to the crash, though investigations are still underway.
Witnesses said the chopper burst into flames on impact, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky.
Residents rushed to the scene moments after the crash in a desperate attempt to rescue survivors from the burning wreckage.
Police said the identities of the victims had not been confirmed by late evening, pending notification of their families.
The helicopter, 5Y DSB, is owned by media mogul, according to aviation sources.
Emergency responders cordoned off the area as recovery efforts continued into the evening.
Investigators are expected to examine weather conditions, technical records and witness accounts to establish the cause of the crash.
