Six senior officers have been placed on administrative action after a viral video showed police officers assaulting youths playing pool in Nandi Hills town, sparking a widespread public outcry.

The National Police Service (NPS) said leadership responsibility stops at the top, insisting commanders must be held accountable for the conduct and actions of officers serving under their command.

The incident was captured on CCTV on the night of January 10, showing at least ten uniformed officers entering a Nandi Hills pool hall and violently confronting unarmed young men.

The footage circulated widely online, triggering public outrage and prompting formal investigations by the National Police Service and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) over the conduct of officers involved.

The National Police Service confirmed it had accepted findings by the Internal Affairs Unit and placed six senior officers on administrative action pending completion of further inquiries.

Those affected include the Tinderet Sub-County Police Commander, station commanders for Songoh and Nandi Hills, and heads of specialised units, including RDU, GSU and ASTU, based at Songoh camp.

“NPS leadership expects every officer to uphold professionalism, respect public dignity and discharge their duties without fear or favour,” said Muchiri Nyaga, director of corporate communications for the NPS.

He added that officers found to have breached established standards and procedures of the service would face appropriate disciplinary and legal consequences after due process.

In its statement, the service said holding commanders responsible aims to reinforce discipline, strengthen oversight, and prevent similar abuses of authority by officers in future operations.

“Officers have a solemn duty as custodians of public safety, security, and property. This obligation must be executed with professionalism at all times,” Nyaga said.

Leaders across Nandi condemned the incident, with Senator Samson Cherargei calling it a violation of citizens’ rights, while Embakasi East MP Babu Owino urged swift action to stop criminalising activities.

Victims have expressed concern over delays in the process, even as the Police Service apologised for the incident and reiterated that unlawful acts by officers will be dealt lawfully.

At the same time, outrage has erupted following the emergence of another disturbing CCTV video showing police officers assaulting two young men who were playing pool in Kikuyu, Kiambu County.

The officers are seen physically assaulting and handcuffing the youths, before dragging them away from the table. They also confiscate the pool cue sticks and balls.
