Businessman and philanthropist Maina wa Kabura was among hundreds of worshippers who attended Ash Wednesday Mass at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Nakuru, marking the start of the Lenten season.

Kabura, who was joined by his son, took part in the afternoon Holy Mass led by Bishop Cleophas Oseso of the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru. The service marked the beginning of Lent—a 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and reflection in preparation for Easter.

During the homily, Bishop Oseso encouraged Christians to embrace the Lenten journey with sincerity and discipline. He called on the faithful to use this season as an opportunity to grow spiritually and to live out the message of repentance, humility, and renewal.

A key moment of the Mass was the Blessing and Imposition of Ashes, a traditional ritual where ashes are placed on the foreheads of worshippers. As each person received the ashes, the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” served as a solemn reminder of life’s fragility and the call to turn back to God.

Speaking after the service, Kabura said sharing the Ash Wednesday Mass with his son made the experience deeply personal and spiritually enriching, adding that it was a special way to reflect on faith, family, and the journey of Lent.

“It’s a time to pause and reflect on our lives, renew our faith, seek forgiveness, and walk more closely with God. This season invites us to grow spiritually and realign our hearts with what truly matters,” he said.

He urged Christians to take Lent seriously by embracing the disciplines of fasting, prayer, and charity, noting that the season was not merely about giving things up but about deepening faith, supporting each other, and focusing on what truly matters.

Kabura has long supported church programs in Nakuru Town East, contributing to the purchase of music equipment, choir uniforms, and seats, as well as funding bursaries and supporting women’s groups. He also regularly attends major religious events in the region.
