Governor Joshua Irungu says the future of job creation in Laikipia lies in empowering youth with practical, hands-on skills through vocational training.
During a consultative meeting held today with board members and managers of Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) across the county, the Governor stressed the need to revamp the sector.
“Technical skills are a pathway to self-reliance. They offer young people the tools to create jobs and build sustainable livelihoods,” Irungu said.
The session focused on identifying barriers facing local VTCs—such as poor enrolment rates and limited infrastructure—and exploring ways to make technical training more accessible and attractive.
Irungu pledged to invest in better facilities, targeted outreach, and programs tailored to market demands.
“Our goal is to build stronger institutions, offer relevant skills, and make vocational education a first choice for many,” he added.
The county plans to work closely with industry partners to ensure training programs remain relevant and lead to real opportunities. The Governor believes this is critical in lifting communities economically and reducing youth unemployment.
Today’s meeting sets the stage for a county-wide strategy aimed at placing skills development at the centre of Laikipia’s economic growth agenda.
