The County Government of Nakuru has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a conducive environment for businesses to thrive across all sectors within Nakuru City.

Governor Susan Kihika said her administration is exploring strategies to enhance operations in the Central Business District (CBD) while maintaining order and vibrancy.

She made the remarks during a consultative meeting with transport stakeholders, among them, matatu owners, operators, and stage crews.

“Key issues raised included street lighting, road condition, insecurity, and the increasing number of street families,” she noted.

The Governor pledged to engage the Kenya Urban Roads Authority to ensure potholes on major urban roads are sealed to ease traffic flow and avoid vehicle breakages.

On the rising cases of insecurity, especially armed robberies, the Governor pledged to escalate the matter to ensure that no residence or business should operate in fear.

“I will work with all stakeholders to promote a safe, business-friendly environment that supports growth, stability, and lasting development in Nakuru,” she vowed.

County Minister for Trade, Stephen Kuria said the city has experienced a surge in new businesses and expansion of existing ones over the past two years.

He credited this to policy reforms such as the introduction of unified licensing, which he said has saved entrepreneurs time and money by cutting bureaucracy.

“We have come up with a simpler licensing structure that incentivizes informal businesses to register and operate legally,” he said.

Kuria added that the return of matatus to the CBD has stimulated investment and trade, explaining that an efficient public transport system makes it easier for customers to access shops and markets.

Central Rift Matatu Owners Association chairman, Stephen Muli, said his office is working to professionalize operations within the city’s transport sector.

He revealed they are collaborating with police and other stakeholders to weed out criminal elements hiding under the guise of matatu operators and touts.

Muli also thanked the Governor for launching the Nakuru County Enterprise Fund and the Cooperative Revolving Development Fund, which he revealed have benefited several transport SACCOs.

“We will add more vehicles to our fleets as we look forward to the completion of the Kingdom Seekers termini for expansion and new routes,” he said.
