Detectives have arrested a 23-year-old man suspected of killing an 18-year-old Form Four student in Molo, ending a manhunt that followed the discovery of the student’s body at a house in Moto Location.

Walter Kipkoech was arrested in Lagwenda village, Kuresoi North, after detectives from Molo, working with officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) at the Regional Criminal Investigations Headquarters, Rift Valley, traced him to his hideout.

The arrest came about a month after the killing of Joy Wangui, a Form Four student at Molo Secondary School, whose body was discovered at her family home in the Kiambaa area of Moto Location on Sunday, October 4.

According to investigators, Wangui’s brother had briefly left the house to go to a nearby shop. When he returned, he found his sister dead inside the kitchen.

“He returned to a horrifying scene: his sister lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen, her head severed from the body,” police said.

Detectives who processed the scene recovered an axe, a panga and two knives, all bearing what appeared to be bloodstains. The items were taken as part of the evidence being examined in the murder investigation.

The discovery of the body prompted a police investigation and a search for Kipkoech, who detectives identified as a person of interest in the killing.

The investigation also uncovered a disturbing message allegedly written on a wall using blood. The message read: “I love you Joy but never cheat, am sorry.”

“Preliminary investigations established that Kipkoech was the deceased’s boyfriend, as detectives pursued a possible relationship dispute as the motive for the killing,” police revealed.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged dispute, including what happened immediately before the attack, remain subject to further investigation as detectives piece together the sequence of events.

Detectives continued pursuing the suspect after he allegedly went into hiding following the killing. The investigation eventually led officers to Lagwenda village, where he was arrested.

Police said the suspect was found wearing a blood-stained boxer, a white T-shirt bearing the deceased’s name at the hem and black jeans with visible dry blood stains when detectives apprehended him.

The clothing has been cited by investigators as part of the evidence to be examined as they establish the circumstances of Wangui’s death.

Kipkoech was subsequently escorted to Molo Police Station, where he was being processed pending arraignment as detectives continued with the investigation.

The arrest has brought a breakthrough in a case that had left Wangui’s family and residents of the Molo area seeking answers over the circumstances surrounding her death.
