Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has joined Kenyans in mourning former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a fearless reformist and a towering figure in Kenya’s political history.

In a heartfelt message shared on his Facebook page, Gachagua paid tribute to the late opposition leader, acknowledging his lifelong struggle for democracy and justice despite their political differences.

“Baba Raila Odinga, may you rest well. To the family, your spouse Mama Ida Odinga and your children, my family and I join you in prayer during this difficult moment,” Gachagua said.

He described Odinga as an “indefatigable lion of Africa,” whose courage and intellect shaped Kenya’s democratic journey. Gachagua praised Odinga’s resilience through years of imprisonment, torture, and political persecution, noting that his sacrifices paved the way for multiparty democracy and the 2010 Constitution.

“Much as we have never been on the same political side, I have had a strong admiration of Raila Odinga’s art of forming and sustaining a strong political party that survived four general elections,” Gachagua said, adding that Odinga’s influence would endure beyond his death.

The former Deputy President hailed Odinga’s legacy as a statesman, teacher, and patriot who dedicated his life to public service in various capacities — from civil servant to Prime Minister.

“Raila Odinga has not gone,” Gachagua concluded in his tribute. “He has only faded away — leaving behind a legacy that will forever light the path of Kenya’s democracy.”
