Ex-Mwea MP Gitau Nabbed In Vehicle Theft Syndicate
By Our Crime Reporter
Former Mwea Member of Parliament Peter Gitau has been arrested in connection with an alleged car theft syndicate following the recovery of two stolen commercial vehicles.
Detectives from the Operation Support Unit arrested Gitau alongside four other suspects after investigations linked them to the theft of two Isuzu lorries stolen in Gatanga, Murang’a County.
The vehicles, an Isuzu FVZ registration number KDQ 845T and an Isuzu FRR registration number KDL 078W, were reported stolen on August 16, 2025, in what police described as a coordinated operation.
Investigators said intelligence-led inquiries tracked the suspects to Mombasa County, where the lorries were later recovered in the Makupa area after days of surveillance.
Police said the Isuzu FVZ had been fitted with counterfeit registration plates KDV 449C, while the Isuzu FRR bore fake plates KCA 505D, allegedly to conceal their identities.
“The suspects are believed to be part of a well-organised network involved in stealing commercial vehicles and altering registration details to evade detection,” said the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
According to investigators, the suspects led detectives to the recovery sites during interrogation, enabling officers to positively identify the lorries using original chassis and engine numbers.
The recovered vehicles are currently being held at DCI Gatanga offices as arrangements are made to return them to their rightful owners, police said.
Gitau served as Mwea Member of Parliament for two terms (2007 – 2017) before losing his seat to Kabinga Wachira and has since maintained a low public profile while overseeing his motor vehicle sale businesses.
Police said all five suspects remain in custody as detectives complete investigations into the theft syndicate, with further arrests not ruled out.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court to face charges related to vehicle theft, forgery, and conspiracy, investigators said.
