Koinange Wahome has received a major boost in his Laikipia gubernatorial bid after a group of former leaders and opinion shapers declared their support, signalling early political alignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Led by former Laikipia East MP Amin Deddy, the leaders said the county must embrace new leadership, arguing that fresh ideas and renewed commitment are needed to accelerate development and improve service delivery.
Deddy urged residents to make informed choices during elections, warning that poor voting decisions could condemn the county to another five years of stalled development and missed opportunities.
“We will participate in ensuring Laikipia elects the best leadership and not Nderitu Mureithi or Mwangi Kiunjuri as governor,” Deddy told supporters during a meeting that drew loud cheers.
He said Laikipia has no room for recycling what he termed failed leadership, insisting that voters must reject leaders who had previously been entrusted with responsibility but failed to deliver.
Although he confirmed he will not contest any elective position, Deddy said he would remain vocal and actively involved in shaping leadership choices ahead of the next general election.
The former legislator said his deep roots in Laikipia give him a strong stake in the county’s future, noting his parents were born and buried there, strengthening his commitment to advocating for responsible leadership and development.
He warned that recycling leaders such as former Governor Mureithi and Laikipia East MP Kiunjuri would undermine progress, urging residents to prioritise competence, integrity and development-oriented leadership in 2027 elections.
“Even though I will not vie for any seat, I thank you for the five years you entrusted me with leadership, and that support gives me pride whenever I walk among you,” he said, expressing his commitment to shape Laikipia’s leadership.
Deddy also encouraged residents to invite him and other like-minded leaders to public gatherings, saying such forums would help educate voters on leadership choices ahead of the 2027 elections.
In the 2022 election, Amin Deddy narrowly lost the Laikipia East seat after securing 28,021 votes against Kiunjuri’s 30,057. He disputed the outcome, alleging irregularities and collusion by election officials, before withdrawing the petition.
