Motorists using the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway have been advised to seek alternative routes following a major traffic disruption caused by an accident at Sachangwan in Molo, Nakuru County.
Police said a loaded lorry lost control at about 1:40 pm and came to rest across both lanes of the busy highway, blocking traffic in both directions and triggering an immediate response from authorities.
Emergency diversion measures have since been activated along the highway, a critical transport corridor linking Kenya’s Rift Valley to western regions and serving cross-border trade within East Africa and the Great Lakes.
To ease congestion, motorists travelling along the Kericho–Kisumu Highway are being redirected through the Njoro–Molo–Nakuru Road, while those heading from Nakuru towards Eldoret have been advised to use the Nakuru–Eldama Ravine–Eldoret route.
Police officers have been deployed at key diversion points to manage traffic flow and guide drivers through the alternative routes, as congestion builds along adjoining roads.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise patience, maintain lane discipline, and strictly follow directions issued by officers on site to ensure safety and minimize delays.
Clearance operations were ongoing at the scene, with efforts focused on removing the obstructing lorry and restoring normal traffic flow along the affected stretch.
“The National Police Service remains committed to providing up-to-date information in the service of the public,” the service said, adding that further updates would be issued as the situation evolves.
The Nakuru–Eldoret Highway remains one of Kenya’s most vital transport arteries, and disruptions along the route often have wider implications for freight movement and long-distance travel across the region.
Motorists have been advised to monitor official updates and allow for additional travel time when planning journeys through the affected area.
